Every third year, a jury of renowned architects slect the best architectural design in Santa Barbara. From a diverse field that includes private residencies, public buildings and intimate interiors, the Jury honors these projects that excel in design excellence. Award-winning Architects from California, Jon Jerde, FAIA, David Baker, FAIA and Grant Kirkpatrick, AIA participated as the 2009 Jury participants.Honor Award Winners are: Santa Barbara Bowl, Institutional by DesignArc with Handel Architects, LLP; Granada Theatre Renovation, remodel by PMSM Architects, Inc.; Oxbow Cliff May Residence, residential by B3 Architects, a Berkus Design StudioThe Jury looks for projects that lift the spirit, sustain natural resources and enhances the environment. AIA Santa Barbara received sixty-two entries from licensed architects or firms within the SB County and or eligible AIA architects or firms from around the country. Each entry was judged on its own merit and evaluated for design resolution, contextualism and innovation. With criteria to demonstrate exemplary skill in resolving formal, functional and technical requirements, entrants were challenged to achieve successful sensitivity and response to its surrounding community incorporating innovations in building materials and techniques if possible.
