Maxwell, R&B legend and songwriter extraordinaire is back with a new album and an ambitious summer tour. Jordan Sargent of Rolling Stone caught up with the well-seasoned artist to talk tour, new album, EDM love, vocal surgery and his obsession with Hype Machine.
In the interview, Maxwell discusses how he attempted to do this tour 2 years ago, but it was cut short due to surgery on his vocals, which forced him to cancel the entire tour. Despite canceling close to 40 shows, he ended up paying his entire staff, his musicians, the crew, everything “Literally out of my own pocket because everyone has families, so I didn’t want them to be restricted because of the experience I was going through. So, I took care of them, and I think it was good karma in itself.”
They get into the dynamics of the new record (which was recorded in Miami) and how he was heavily influenced by his cousins death during the process, “it totally changed everything about the album on some level because there’s a certain amount of counting your blessings, forgiving things that you thought were unforgivable.”
When asked if he has ever been to an EDM show, Maxwell goes on to say “I’ve been to EDM shows. I love them. Big fan of so many of those guys. I do believe there’s a new wave of a certain sound, you know a Chris Malinchak and Cyril Hahn. Disclosure. Things are getting more soulful, and I’m excited about that. I think that that’s a good look. But I love all that stuff.”
