Collecting the Bowl’s History: 1977 Edition

We are pulling together the Bowl’s rich history by collecting historical ephemera that helps tell the story. We find these unique pieces online, receive them through donations, and sometimes, one of our neighbors stops by with a treasured piece of the past.

That’s how we came upon this gem: A gift from Juliet Lewis, a neighbor of the Bowl and the daughter of Mary Rose Lewis, pictured on page 2 of the booklet. Mary Lewis worked at the Bowl throughout the 1970s, and in 1977 acted as the Bowl’s Executive Secretary and Usher Supervisor.

“She started working as the secretary for Old Spanish Days and was there all through the late 70s and into the 80s,” said Juliet of her mom’s tenure with the Bowl. “When Peter Tosh played, she was still working there and I got the tour poster, it was the Mama Africa tour.”

The 12-page booklet was produced to recap the year’s success (in this case 1977), update the public on changes to the facility, staff and generally document goings-on at the Bowl.

Interestingly from this issue:

“1977 marks the first year that the County Bowl will operate year-round.”

And that the Bowl:

“has become nationally recognized as an outdoor amphitheatre drawing such top performers as The Carpenters, Jose Feliciano, Peter Frampton, Bruce Springsteen, Jefferson Starship….”

Plus, the booklet featured an updated seating chart:
