In the spring of 2020, nearly 200 students from Goleta Union School District lost their schools’ band program because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, leaving students going into junior high school musically unprepared for the next levels of their journey, leaving an instrumental gap in their musical education.
Seeing that gap in music education, Sandy Adams and GUSD’s band co-director, Nancy Mathison, launched the South Coast Youth Band to provide equitable, consistent access to music for all elementary school students in the fourth through sixth grades from Gaviota to Carpinteria.
Students in the program will be taught instruments such as the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion by professional musicians.
This type of dedicated programming is one that SBBowl Outreach is thrilled to help aid with Flash Grant funding. Bowl Outreach invests in future artists by ensuring that every student receives the opportunity to arts education programs.
