Bowl Outreach is so excited to share that Carpinteria’s first mariachi youth group, Mariachi Estrellas, held its first recital for family and friends at the beginning of the summer!
Suzanne Requejo, program director for Artesania para la Familia, said the recital celebrated the six months of mariachi music classes that students could participate in thanks to the expansion of the arts and literacy program. The mariachi program can operate due to grants from the Santa Barbara Bowl Outreach and the Rotary Club of Carpinteria.
Requejo said Canalino Elementary School and Carpinteria Middle School, depending on funding and instructor availability, hope to offer mariachi classes in the fall of this year.
The Santa Barbara Bowl is dedicated to increasing access to music education and knows that lack of funding for instruments can be a barrier to interested students. The Bowl’s Instrument Fund was created in response to the many recurring needs of local schools and music education programs. Instrument Funding is available to repair and purchase instruments, music equipment, and accessories.
