Susan Van Atta discusses the Rudolf C. Ziesenhenne Memorial Begonias Garden at the Santa Barbara Bowl:
Ziesenhenne lived on the property where the Dreier Box office is now, and is responsible for naming 20 new begonias species and creating 70 hybrids. His work was so widely known that tour buses full of amateur botanists would often come to tour his famous greenhouse. The completed Dreier Box Office includes an honorary are for Rudolf C. Ziesenhenne with a lush glen nearby containing all native species, including those very special begonias.
Rudolf was also a photographer, and his images documenting the Bowl’s construction back in the ‘20s and ‘30s, adorn the walls of the main hallway & under the stage. Thanks to Rudy, we have a historical record of the huge civic effort it took to create this amazing venue we all know and love. Next time you are watching a show, swing by the Rudolf C. Ziesenhenne Memorial Begonias Garden and enjoy!
