Jackson Browne’s Music Tell Personal Stories

Throughout the 1970’s, Jackson Browne was considered a rock singer/songwriter who knew how to make expressive and soulful music. Browne is an artist that allows his personal life to be expressed in his music, creating soundscapes that emotionally reach many people. Here are three songs Browne wrote with very personal meanings:

1) “Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate”- This song openly discusses suicide and Browne’s personal experience with the tragedy. In 1976, Browne’s wife took her own life while he was working on his album The Pretender.

2) “Before the Deluge”- this song speaks about a hopeless and dark future.

3) “Running on Empty”- a song about Browne in various stage of his life and how he feels that past events from his youth will continue to affect him for life.
