On Tuesday, April 14, Aretha Franklin performed at the White House to celebrate gospel music as apart of PBS’ “In Performance at the White House” series. The President and First Lady invited music legends and top gospel artists to perform as they paid tribute to music that has helped shaped American history and culture. President Obama described gospel music as “songs of hope that we might rise above our failures and disappointments.”

It was a night full of high spirits that included an interactive student workshop on the origins of gospel music and a Q&A with all the performers of the evening. Obama was excited to have Aretha Franklin at the White house as one of the performers, referring to her as “the Queen of Soul.” The show will be broadcast nationwide on PBS stations on June 26 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
