Just after 12 hours of release Ray LaMontagne’s new album, “Supernova”, lands at No. 2 on iTunes. It has been over 10 years since the emotive “Trouble” album was released. “Supernova” was produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who adds a hazy, psychedelic vibe that loosens up LaMontagne ’s best-known folky songs. The album has a breezy sound and has a rave review from “Rolling Stone: and praise from “The Wall Street Journal”. However, LaMontagne says he doesn’t pay attention to all of that, “I just make records. And hope they’re beautiful.” He wrote songs from his new album mostly from his farm home in Western Massachusetts, but “Supernova” is filled with references to Southern California. He talks more about his music journey and album details in an interview with Billboard here. His album has also had many critics from his fans questioning his new, upbeat and “happy” music. LaMontagne responds to these comments saying, “There’s no ‘happy Ray’ and there’s no ‘sad Ray.’ I’m just me. I just write songs. When they come to me, those are the ones that come to me. Once I start hearing the record in my hear and it sounds beautiful to me, I take the next step and try to make the record and hope it sounds like it does in my head.”
