English indie rock band Florence and the Machine recently shared a 10 minute short film featuring tracks “Queen of Peace” and “Long & Lost” from their third album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, which was released on June 2nd.
The poignant videos reflect their soundtracks depicting Florence in the throes of a violent society, fighting to escape while maintaining a sense of peace.
“We shot in the winter and it was cold, brutal and endlessly inspiring, which I think really helped the story of Florence’s struggle with her family, the younger innocence vs. the feuding violence of the men around her, etc,” director Vincent Haycock said in a statement.

This new album is all about the total, utter devastations of heartbreak. Rolling Stone describes it as, “Gone are the signature African-goth drums, replaced by a dry, midtempo Motown backbeat dressed in tambourine shimmer and orchestral flourishes…The tension makes for a sexy record that sticks to some familiar themes: a woman wrestling with lovers and emotions, often with biblical allusions, liquid-courage assists and a near-violent intensity. But the scale has ballooned. Welch sings about crossing canyons, kissing skylines, pulling the earth around her.” Read the full review here.
The album topped the UK charts and was the first of theirs to debut at Number one on the US Billboard 200. Florence and the Machine performed at the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Concert and this year they headlined the Glastonbury Festival, making Florence Welch the first British female headliner this century.
